Habiba Tutors
Habiba Tajwid teachers have read the Qur’an in its entirety with Tajwid and have Ijazah, i.e. are certified to teach, by scholars such as Shaykh Al-Kurdi of Damascus. The Tajwid teachers are also selected for their teaching qualifications such as QTS and CELTA, as well as for their zeal to pass on that which Allah has bestowed on them. Habiba Institute currently has qualified teachers all over Greater London, including the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Hackney, Hounslow, Ealing, Redbridge and Enfield. There are also teachers outside the London area in High Wycombe, Luton, Rochdale and Manchester.
Ustadha Muhsina Thaherah is qualified with a Bachelor of Education (BEd) with QTS and CELTA. She has a Diploma in Arabic Language from the Shariah Institute in France (IESH) and has studied Arabic with Ustadh Muhammad (PhD in Arabic Pedagogy). She received Ijazah in the renowned Tajwid text Al-Jazariyyah from Shaykh Ayman Suwaid of the Arabian Peninsula and the Qira’ah of the Qur’an from Shaykh Al-Kurdi of Damascus and has Ijazah for Nur al-Idah from female scholars in Syria. After a period of study in the Middle East she continued studying Hadith, Qira’ah and Mustalah with scholars such as Shaykh Akram Nadwi, Shaykh Samir An-Nass, Maulana Hafiz Gulfraz and Shaykh Abd Al-Qadir, her father. Ustadha Muhsina Thaherah has been active in Da'wah work for a number of years and has helped to organise IIDR's Tajdid residential project in recent years. She has also compiled the Habiba Tajwid Pack and is currently working on writing other documents. She is Managing Director of the Habiba Institute.
Ustadha Amina Khatun Baksh is an Arabic and English graduate and the founder of Habiba Instiutute. She is a PGCE qualified teacher with both QTS and CELTA teaching qualifications.She has studied Arabic, Tajwid, Fiqh and Aqeeda in the Middle East. She has also studied Islamic Sciences from Shaykh Ali Hani, Shaykh Samir An-Nass, Ustadha Um Sahl, Ustadha Hedaya Hartford and Ustadh Amienullah. Her studies include Al-Ajrumiyyah, I'rab, Sarf and other Arabic literature. She also has Ijazah in the text of Al-Jazariyyah and the Qira’ah of the Qur’an from Shaykh Al-Kurdi of Damascus.She has pursued an MA in Islamic Studies (Arabic Translation) from SOAS. Ustadha Um Muhammad has been teaching the Arabic language during the past five to six years and has been writing material to enable students to learn effectively. She continues to attend Arabic, Tajwid and Tafseer courses with Shaykh Akram Nadwi, Shaykh Hasan Ali, Maulana Shams Ad-Duha and Maulana Hafiz Gulfraz. She is currently an Arabic, Tajwid and Calligraphy teacher at the Habiba Institute.
Ustadha Fatima Dabbousi, originally from Lebanon, is a distinguished teacher who has Ijazah in the Qira'ah of the Qur'an from Shaykh Al-Kurdi of Damascus. She also has Ijazah in the text of Al-Jazariyyah. Ustadha Fatima has several years of experience in teaching Islamic sciences to children and adults in innovative ways. She has studied and taught Seerah and Shafi'i Fiqh and is the initiator of the project, ‘Standards for Tajwid Teachers’, which is now at its formative stage. She studied for an MSc in Architectural Engineering. Ustadha Fatima currently resides in London and is one of the coordinators at the Syrian Arabic School in West London. She is also a part time Tajwid and Arabic grammar teacher at the Habiba Institute. Additionally, she teachers Tajwid at Al-Birr Foundation in Leyton.
Ustadha Manal Zayyat studied Islamic Shariah at the Shariah Institute in France (IESH). She has also completed a postgraduate course in Islamic Studies at SOAS, University of London and is currently completing a PHD. She has been studying the Islamic Sciences for several years and has studied under various shuyookh from around the world. She has profound knowledge and experience in many of the Islamic Sciences, for example, tajwid, Arabic, hadith, Seerah etc. She is currently a Tajwid teacher in Wembley and has demonstrated excellent delivery of this science to students of the Qur’an.
Ustadha Raadia Fatima has a BA (Hons) in Arabic and English and is a PGCE qualified teacher possessing both QTS and CELTA. She studied Arabic in Egypt and has a Diploma in Arabic Language from the Shariah Institute in France (IESH). She studied Arabic with Ustadh Muhammad Mustafa (PhD in Arabic Pedagogy), Al-Ajrumiyyah with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf Hanson, and Tajwid with Shaykh Zakariya Al-Siddiqi. She continues to study with a number of traditional scholars including Shaykh Abd Al-Qadir, her father. Ustadha Raadia has been involved in coordinating IIDR projects such as Tajdid as well as weekend intensive courses. She has been studing Arabic, Tajwid and other Islamic Sciences in Egypt for a number of years. On her brief returns she hopes to deliver intensive courses in Arabic and Tajwid at the Habiba Institute when feasible.
Ustadha Ilham Salimane is originally from Morocco. She is an inspiring teacher with many years of experience in teaching Qur’an to children and adults. She has Ijazah in the text of Al-Jazariyyah and the Qira’ah of the Qur’an from Shaykh Al-Kurdi of Damascus. She has studied Experimental Science in Morocco and is currently completing a BA in Islamic Studies. She is a teacher of Arabic and Tajwid at both the Habiba Institute and Al-Birr Foundation.
Ustadha Daisy has a BSc(hons) degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Westminster. She is currently working with Health Education Programmes for the local community.She is an ambitious individual with great zeal for the learning and teaching of the Qur’an. She has successfully completed the Habiba Tajwid Modules 1 - 3 and is currently doing the Tajwid Teacher Training / Jazariyyah course at the Habiba Institute. She has studied the science of the Qur'an with various scholars including Sheikh Bukhari. She has a great passion for learning and teaching the Qur'an and is currently a Tajwid teacher who has demonstrated very good delivery of this science to students. Daisy also has high organisational skills and is presently managing Habiba Institute events.
Ustadha Suzan Arabi is a qualified teacher with a PGCE and a BA in Psychology. She has studied the Tajwid text of Al-Jazariyyah with Shaykha Rehab, wife of Shaykh Aiman. She is currrently an Arabic teacher at an Islamic School in Luton. Susan is teaching Tajwid and Arabic teacher at the Habiba Institute and has delivered many successfl modules in Luton.
Iffat Jahan has completed the two years intensive Alimah Course at Jamia Al-Huda in Nottingham. She has completed a diploma the Arabic language and is currently pursuing a degree in the Arabic lamguage. Iffat has studied Qur'an, Arabic, Seerah and Hadith under a number of traditional Islamic scholars in Manchester. She is a Tajwid and Arabic teacher at the Habiba Institute, based in Manchester.
Ustadha Shabana Rashid is an experienced Arabic teacher who studied for two years at the Qasid Institute in Jordan, where she successfully completed the five stage Arabic Language and Literature programme. She also studied Islamic sciences with several scholars, including Shaykh Hussein, Ustadha Hedaya Hartford and Um Sahl from Amman. She is currently an Arabic teacher at the Habiba Institute.
Ustadha Rayhana Shifa is one of Habiba Institute’s distinguished teachers. She spent a year in Egypt studying Arabic, Tajwid and Arabic Calligraphy. Currently she is teaching the science of Tajwid to both Arab and non-Arab students. She has completed the Tajwid Teacher Training course and produced an excellent teaching resource file. She previously studied with distinguished Syrian scholars such as Shaykh Samir An-Nass and Shaykh Abd Ar-Razzaq, as well as locally with Maulana Hafiz Gulfraz.
Ustadha Maida Akif Khan graduated with a BA (Hons) in Arabic and English. She has completed CELTA and is currently teaching ESOL in East London, as well as interpreting part time in IIIT. She has studied Islamic Sciences in the Arabic medium from Shaykh Ali Hani and other traditional scholars. She has also studied Al-Ajrumiyyah, I’rab, Sarf and a number of classical Arabic texts. Maida has many years of teaching experience in the Arabic language and is currently an Arabic teacher at the Habiba Institute, in High Wycombe. Maida is also the founder and coordinator of The Karima Foundation based in High Wycombe www.karima.org.uk
Ustadha Shuly Akhter has studied Islamic Sciences with a number of scholars including Shaykh Hamza Yusuf Hanson, Shaykh Muhammad Sbini and a female Qur'an teacher from Syria. She has been teaching Tajwid for a number of years, each year building on her teaching skills by evaluating and adding new ideas and techniques. She is currently a Tajwid Teacher at the Habiba Institute and has Ijazah in the text of Al-Jazariyyah and the Qira’ah of the Qur’an from Shaykh Al-Kurdi of Damascus.
Ustadha Rahela has completed her NVQ Level 3 and is currently the coordinator of Rainbow Childrens Centre in East London. She has Ijazah in the Qira'ah of the Qur'an from Shaykh Al-Kurdi of Damascus. She also has Ijazah in the text of Al-Jazariyyah. Rahela has many years of experience in teaching tajwid to children and adults. She is a Tajwid teacher at the Habiba Institute and the coordinator of Habiba Teens.
Ustadha Um Nu’man is a first class graduate of Arabic. She has studied for two years in the Middle East, including Islamic Sciences in the Arabic medium with Shaykh Ali Hani and other traditional scholars. Her studies have covered Al-Ajrumiyyah, I’rab, Sarf and a number of other Arabic texts. After returning to the UK she pursued an MA in Islamic Studies (Arabic Translation) from SOAS and CELTA. Ustadha Um Nu’man has been teaching the Arabic language over the past five to six years and has been developing an effective teaching methodology to help unravel Arabic in a systematic way for learners. She continues to study Advanced Arabic, Tajwid and Tafseer with Shaykh Hasan Ali, Maulana Shams Ad-Duha and Maulana Hafiz Gulfraz. She is currently an Arabic teacher trainer and the North London coordinator of the Habiba Institute.
Ustadha Zaynab Umar is an Alimah who has Ijazah in the recitation of the entire Qur'an from Shaykh Al-Kurdi in Syria. She studied for a year in Syria after the completion of her Alima course at Jamia Al-Huda in Nottingham. She has completed a BA in Arabic from SOAS and is currently pursuing a PGCE in teaching the Arabic language. She is also actively learning with a number of traditional Islamic scholars in England, while at the same time, passing on what she has been granted by Allah. She is an Arabic and Tajwid teacher at both the Habiba Institute and Edmonton Mosque.
Munira Khawaja s a graduate with BA Honours in History. Munira is a third year Aalimah student at Madani Girls School. Munira has been learning and teaching Tajwid to teenage children for the past three years. She has studied with Maulana Gulfraz and has travelled to Syria to further her knowledge of Arabic and Tajwid. She is currently working towards pursuing her Tajwid Ijazah. She teaches Arabic and Tajwid at the Habiba Institute.
Hana Khawaja is a graduate with BA Honours in Philosophy. Currently Hana is a third year Aalimah student at Madani Girls School. Hana has been learning and teaching Tajwid to teenage children for the past few years. She has studied with Maulana Gulfraz and has travelled to Syria to further her knowledge of Arabic and Tajwid. She is currently working towards pursuing her Tajwid Ijazah. She teaches Tajwid at the Habiba Institute.
Ustadha Forida Khanom is a graduate with qualified teacher with a PGCE and QTS. She is a talented and ambitious individual with great zeal for the learning and teaching of the Qur’an. She has travelled to Syria, Egypt and Jordan to further her knowledge of Arabic and Tajwid. Amongst the Shuyukh she read Qur'an to are Sh Salah al Kurdy, Sh Samir an-Nuss and Maulana Hafiz Gulfraz. She studied at the Qasid Institute in Jordan. She has successfully completed the Tajwid Teacher Training course at the Habiba Institute where she wrote her own course book on Tajwid. She is currently a Tajwid teacher and has demonstrated excellent delivery of this science to students of the Qur’an.
Ustadha Fouzia is a first class Arabic graduate from SOAS. She has also completed Arabic courses at the University of Damascus and the world renowned Al-Qarawiyyin University in Fez with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf Hanson, Shaykh Jamal al-Dhahabi (Canada), Shaykh Abdul Hayy and others. She received Ijazah in Tajwid from Shaykh Al-Kurdy of Damascus. She has studied Al-Ajrumiyya, I'rab, Sarf and several other Arabic texts. Currently she is studying Hanafi Fiqh with Shaykh Ridhwan and teaching Qur’an in Hounslow. Since returning from Syria and Morocco she has obtained the GTP and QTS teaching qualifications at the University of Gloucestershire. She is presently teaching Arabic and Tajwid at the Habiba Institute.
Ustadha Aisha Tasneem is an Arabic and Islamic Studies graduate from SOAS. She has also completed the Tajwid Teacher Training course with Maulana Shams Ad Duha and Maulana Hafiz Gulfraz. During her studies on this course she produced an excellent Tajwid Course Handbook, for which she was awarded the highest mark. She has been teaching at the Habiba Institute with great enthusiasm and has received excellent feedback from students.
Ustadha Rufia Islam studied Islamic sciences at the Qasid Institute and Zarqa University in Jordan. She has completed the Tajwid Teacher Training course and has also studied with a number of well known scholars. These include Shaykh Samir An-Nass of Damascus, Shaykh Sa’ad Al-Attas, Ustadha Hedaya Hartford and Um Sahl in Amman, as well as locally with Maulana Hafiz Gulfraz. Currently she is completing the final year of a BA in Arabic at University of Westminster. Ustadha Rufia is an Arabic and Tajwid teacher at the Habiba Institute and the coordinator for its Rochdale branch.
Ustadha Um Kulthum is a graduate with qualified teacher with PGCE and QTS. She has many years of teaching experience at both school and adult education. She has travelled to Syria and Jordan to learn sacred knowledge. She started as a Tajwid student at the Habiba Institute and developed herself steadily and became an excellent Tajwid teacher. Ustadha Um Kulthum is multi-talented and balances out all her roles well. She also has her own Islamic clothing business Pardha, which she maintains alongside her busy life.
Occasional Male Lecturers
Shaykh Abdassamad Clarke is a renowned writer, translator and editor of classical works. These include, 'The History of the Khalifahs Who Took the Right Way', 'A Madinan View on the Sunnah', 'The Clear Victory', 'Year of the Elephant', 'Drops from an Ocean' and Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani's Al-Kitab Al-Jami', which is a manual on Maliki Fiqh. More recently he has translated 'Rijal', a biography of the narrators of the Muwatta of Imam Muhammad, as well as the entire Arba'un An-Nawawiyyah with its commentary, which has been published as The Complete Forty Hadith. He has taught this as the '40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi with Embedded Arabic' course at the Habiba Institute. This series of lectures is now available on the audio section of the website.
Maulana Hafiz Shams ad-Doha the Director of the Ebrahim Community College taught the Habiba Tajwid Teacher Training Course. He also trained many of the Habiba teachers in Arabic Syntax and Fiqh.
Maulana Hafiz Gulfraz has Ijazah in Al-Qur'an Al-Kareem bi Tareeqat Warsh 'an Nafi' (accreditation for teaching the Glorious Qur'an by the way of Warsh from Nafi') and Ijazah in Al-Qur'an Al-Kareem bi Tareeqat Hafs 'an 'Asim (accreditation for teaching the Glorious Qur'an by the way of Hafs from 'Asim). He also has Islamic scholarship from Darul Uloom London, including certain books of Tajwid, and Qira'at competition certificates from the Lajna (Council) of Damascus. He has completed the memorisation of the Glorious Qur’an and has also had the privilege to visit many different countries to lead and perform the Taraweeh prayer during the blessed month of Ramadan. These have included Canada, Malaysia, USA, Fiji, Wales, Australia, and most recently, Yokohama in Japan. He is presently the Imam at Edmonton Mosque in North London and teaches at various institutions, including delivering the Tajwid Teacher Training Course at the Habiba Institute.
Ustadh Ahmed Faruq As-Siddiqui is a graduate from Jami' Al-Fath in Damascus who has memorised the entire Qur'an. He studied for 3 years at the Shariah Institute in France (IESH) and is currently teaching Islamic Sciences at various Islamic centres in London.
Ustadh Abu Aminah Afdhal is an Arabic graduate from SOAS. He has travelled to many Arabic countries in pursuit of knowledge among them is Mauritania where he recieved his Ijazah to teach the Ajrumiyyah. He was a teacher for the IIDR course Classical Quranic Arabic. He has translated a learning guide to the Arabic language for English speakers using Al-Ajrumiyyah. He will be teaching this classical text as an intensive course in the near future.
